“Light and lock twin in one, safety guard for bikes & bikers.”
KLUX merges a bicycle light and a bicycle lock into a single accessory. The light doubles as the key, installing it unlocks the bike, and locking the bike through the frame makes it far harder to steal. One simple habit replaces two separate products.

Lights cut night-time accidents by 70% — yet almost nobody fits them.
Under the influence of the epidemic, mass transportation has released the demand for commuting, so the number of personal vehicles such as bicycles has increased. The safety of bikers has become more important than before, and so has the bike itself as the belongings of bikers.
As a safety accessory, bicycle lights can reduce the accident rate by 70% at night and 19% during the day. Installing lights on a bicycle improves the safety of bikers significantly. But in Taiwan, the rate of installing bicycle lights still remains a very low proportion. We hope that by changing the way lights are used, we can improve the willingness to install them.

After analysis, we figured that the best way to make bikers install a light on their bike is to combine it with the process of riding the bike itself.
We went through all the bike accessories and found that locks are only used when the bikes are locked, and lights, on the other hand, are only used when riding. So we decided to combine two products into one, to complete a full circle of using experience.

Among all bikers, we take daily commuters as our target audience, because they ride their bike on an everyday basis. Our design therefore focuses on a simple commuting process and composite functions.

Referring to the existing fixing methods of bike accessories, we sorted out the possible locking positions and ideated the solutions, then chose the options with higher desirability for testing.

Bike lights are only used while riding, and locks only while parked. KLUX brings the two together so a single object covers the whole ride, and the light becomes the key that releases the bike.

For the final exhibition of thesis design projects, we made a functional prototype to demonstrate the features. We used ABS as the material, with simple lighting and a magnetic switch to make it work.
